I’m not sure of the exact date but early March of 2014 I woke up in a hospital bed from a nine-day induced coma. I had no idea where I was or when it was, my brain was stuck in 2012. I left the hospital end of March, missing all my memories, a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and a diagnosis of epilepsy. I still had months of rehab ahead of me and I had no idea what direction my life was going.
My husband worked night shift during this time so our kids were living with my parents during the week and then be home on the weekends until I graduated all rehab and was allowed to drive again, THREE MONTHS later. During that three months I had a list of things I couldn’t do:
- No driving
- No swimming alone
- No running alone
- No biking alone
- No working out alone
- No bathing/showering if no one else is home
- No using the stove without telling someone you turned it on and off
- …
I don’t like being told I can’t do things. (Maybe why I later became a personal trainer). I had to find a way to take some control of my life back. We were in a small house with a small garden so I started teaching myself to can while searching for a permanent home. And we found our wonderful slice of life: 10 acres with a large garden already plotted out, an asparagus patch to envy (two foot wide by 80 feet long), a beautiful stone barn, chicken coop and a grainery with attached garage. Finding this place and winning it on auction was the first step to living the dream of being self-reliant and taking back control.
This blog is going to follow my family’s crazy life in homesteading where we often take on too much at once. We aren’t afraid to try new things, but sometimes my brain messes with me and we find ourselves in funny situations, that we call adventures. I hope you come along this crazy journey of mine and maybe you could learn a thing or two as I learn A LOT!
